Learners finish a first practice quest, learn one safety rule, and leave knowing they can use an AI helper. No accounts, no cost, and no live-AI surprises.

Before learners arrive
Five calm minutes of setup keeps the learner in charge once the session starts.
Teaching what AI is before a group workshop? Use the 30-minute AI literacy lesson plan.
- Open ablemakers.org/start on each device and check that sound works.
- On a reused device, choose Start for a new learner. The temporary workshop space will not change someone else's saved progress.
- Choose one learner or a small group of up to three for each device.
- Tell learners the chat is practice. It is safe to tap and nothing can go wrong.
- Have headphones available for learners who prefer them, but never require them.
The 30-minute facilitator guide
Follow the clock loosely. Learner comfort matters more than finishing every minute on time.
This session is designed for one quest. The chat offers another Meet AI activity when the learner has time and energy to continue.
- Minutes 0–5
Welcome and make it comfortable
Give each learner or small group a device. Open the start link and choose Start for a new learner on a shared device. Let the learner choose read-aloud and text size. Say: Today, you are in charge of an AI helper.
- Minutes 5–20
Learners drive the practice chat
Let the learner tap each glowing message and hear the reply. Pause when they want to talk. The chat is scripted, so there are no live-AI surprises and no wrong buttons.

Practice the safety rule
Ask: What stays private? Reinforce the short list: address, phone number, passwords, money details, and ID numbers. Important choices always go to a trusted person.
- Minutes 25–30
Celebrate and choose what comes next
Name one thing each learner did. Let them see the first-quest badge. If time and energy feel right, offer the next Meet AI activity. It is always okay to end while the learner feels successful.
Three safety rules to repeat
Short rules are easier to remember, rehearse, and use outside the workshop.
Practice first
AbleMakers uses a prewritten practice chat. No live AI talks to the learner during this activity.
Private stays private
Do not enter names, addresses, phone numbers, passwords, money details, or ID numbers into a real AI chat.
People make big decisions
Use AI for ideas, words, plans, and practice. Ask a trusted person about medicine, money, safety, signing, paying, or big feelings.
Help without taking over
The goal is not speed. The goal is one learner making one real choice on their own.
- Wait for the read-aloud voice to finish before adding another instruction.
- Point to the next glowing message, but let the learner tap it.
- Accept the learner's communication method: speaking, pointing, signing, or AAC. Do not require speech or typing.
- Use one short sentence at a time. Silence is thinking time, not a problem.
- Keep a shared-device workshop in the same browser tab. Its temporary learner space ends when the tab closes. For lasting progress, learners can use AbleMakers on their own device.
After the workshop, notice what learners did
